Week 3 From Guatemala to Costa Rica

WEEK 3

Goodbye Guatemala, Hello Costa Rica!

We finished up our last day in Antigua, Guatemala by going to a nursing home and taking all of the elderly that are unable to get out by pushing them in their wheel chairs to the local park and then presenting our Gospel program for all in the park.  After the program, we pushed the elderly over cobble stone streets back to the nursing home to do another demonstration to the ones that were mobile.  The next day, we were whisked away and up at 2:00 am to go on to another adventure in a new world.

We have now arrived safely in Costa Rica. It has been another long week, this time training the local churches here in San Jose to do what we are doing, so that when we leave, the ministry will continue on.  Although American teams can intrigue people and draw a large crowd, the native people are better able to reach out and minister to the local people the best.  We have been conducting training seminars in sketch-board, Gospel illusions, puppetry and drama/mime.  Since professional puppets are very expensive to purchase, around $100 each, we are also teaching the church how to make their own puppets and the puppets look great!  They have done such a lovely job.

Please continue to pray for energy and endurance as for the next three weeks we will only have half a day off, making a total of one and a half days off in five and a half weeks.

Training in Drama/mime
Training
In Guatemala we only spent 2 days to train the people; Ruth led the puppets, Shauna and Sam taught drama, Carmina showed a group how to make puppets, and the rest of us gave a hand wherever we could. However, the first day our translators weren’t there so we had to combine everyone’s Spanish to communicate. So at the end of the week we had a kid’s club where the trainees weren’t even asked, but they stepped up to the task and performed the puppets and drama for the kids. This past Saturday, we flew out to Costa Rica, and on Monday we started training new disciples. Me, Sam, Paul, and Misael (from OAC, Mexico) our translator, are responsible for teaching people the sketch-board.Taira, Misael’s, was assigned with Adam and Ruth
as her assistants for puppet making and puppet training, while Carmina, Tim, and Shauna taught drama. We are teaching two messages for the sketch-board “Lord Save Me” and “If Only.” The first day we showed the the general idea of how to use the sketch board (how to make the letters, people, boarders, etc.). After learning to use to sketch board we gave them out-lines and preached the messages to them(this is separated into two groups.  The first one learned “If Only” and the second learned “Lord Save Me”). On the second day the disciples painted up their own messages and preached them in front of the class. Every now and then we’d catch a glimpse of the drama team and the puppet squad. The drama team has already perfected the scene in “Sent Free” where the devil temps the girl and she is crushed in her sin, whereas the puppet squad has already got started in making the puppets.

Training in Puppet Making
It’s such a blessing to see God’s work being preached to the ends of the earth, as is demanded from us. Though I do miss doing open air ministry myself and doing the training side of things, it feels great to set up a stronghold in other countries.

Transformed
In our devotions we have been reading the book of Acts. I’ve been learning to trust God and let Him take over when I get nervous, or have fear in the ministry. In Acts chapter 9, it talks of how Saul is confronted by the Lord and is converted. In this chapter Saul had began to preach the Gospel and because of it the Jews tried to kill him, but he continued to preach, this time, with the apostles. The Jews, once again, tried to kill him. Then the chapter says that disciples grew in number. In my application of this, I learned that fear is a common tool for Satan to use to bring us down, but we need to be like Saul and boldly continue to preach the Gospel. This week I was nervous to play a part in the drama “Set Free”. I didn’t have my drama clothes because they were drying from the wash, so I had plenty of excuses to let someone else play the part. Adam gave me one of his drama shirts and I decided to play the part. After I was done, I was told it was the best I had ever done in the drama. God is teaching me to let Him do with me as he pleases. I thank you for all your support and continue to pray for us.   We need it.
